Design Thermal vs. Electronic: • Thermal (Bi-Metal) flashers are a mechanical device that operate through the heating and cooling of a bi-metal strip, opening and closing the contacts, causing the lamps to “flash”. • Electronic flashers are comprised of an electro-mechanical relay with an opposing A and B coil. A capacitor prevents one coil from pulling in relay contacts until it is fully charged. The charging and discharging of the capacitor along with a resistor determine the flash rate and set duty cycle (on/off time). In some cases you can replace a Thermal Flasher with an Electronic Flasher but never replace an Electronic Flasher with a Thermal Flasher.
