n Aluminum Oxide (Synthetic)
Mainly brown in color, Aluminum Oxide is a tough, durable mineral. Aluminum Oxide is the most widely used abrasive in sanding applications today because
it offers a good cut rate and durability. It is used in applications from aggressive stock removal to fine finishing and polishing. Used on work pieces including
metal (ferrous and non-ferrous), wood (soft and hard), plastics and leathers.
n Silicon Carbide (Synthetic)
Mainly black in color, Silicon Carbide is a hard mineral, yet fractures easily to provide a sharp edge as it wears. It offers a good cut rate with excellent finish
characteristics. Used on work pieces including softer non-ferrous metals (aluminum, brass, bronze, magnesium and titanium), rubber, stainless steel, wood
(soft and hard), particleboard, MDF plywood, plastics, glass and leathers.
n 3M Ceramic abrasive grain (Synthetic)
Mainly white in color, 3M Ceramic abrasive grain is a tough, durable mineral. The mineral resists fracturing which attributes to extended abrasive life while
still providing a consistent finish. Can be used on wood and ferrous metals in applications requiring heavy stock removal all the way to fine finishing.
N
atural Minerals: Emery, Flint and Garnet
Emery, Flint and Garnet are all natural minerals that have unique properties which provide good finishing results. Best used in finishing applications and
sanding “end-grain” to prevent burning.

Application Overview
Wide Belt Sanding
Wide belt sanding is the process for sanding relatively level work pieces like doors, face frames and panels. Wide belt
sanders range from single head to multiple heads with top and bottom functional capabilities.
Edge Sanding
Edge sanding involves the sanding of flat, narrow surfaces with small surface areas like panel edges. Additionally, a
variety of cases, tables and chairs (some having band sawn surfaces) are sanded on this type of equipment.
Portable Belt Sanding
Coarse grades remove wood stock to a uniform dimension, leaving enough wood to develop the final finish.
The finishing grade(s) remove all previous abrasive grit scratches. Have no more than a one-grade jump
between rough and finish sanding. For example, rough sand with 36-grit, followed by no finer than 50-grit.
Stroke Sanders
A machine that makes sanding contact by “stroking” the back of a moving coated abrasive belt with a back-up block
or pad (hand lever, crosser belt or automatic stroke sander applications). Essentially, these machines consist of two
or more pulleys over which the coated abrasive belt travels, a table which supports the work piece and means for
applying pressure and movement along the belt. The most common application is to sand solid wood and veneer
surfaces in the furniture and woodworking marketplace where sharp cut and consistent finishes are required.
Mould/Profile Sanding
In mould/profile sanding, the abrasive belt generally runs over a shaped block that transfers the shape of the block
into the wood. Work pieces include stiles, rails, trim and crown molding and in some cases, stock as wide as drawer
fronts. Stock feed speeds may vary up to 130 SFPM or more. Abrasive belts run at approximately 2000 SFPM for
intricate shapes and up to 4000 SFPM for flats and less detailed shapes.
Pump Sleeves
Pump Sleeves (pneumatic drum) sanders are used when looking to sand irregular shapes and contours. These
flexible drum sanders are canvas-covered, air-inflated bladders that act as a soft or hard contact roll, depending on
how much air pressure is placed inside of the bladder. They are especially well suited for sanding and conforming to
contour surfaces, such as chair components and table bases.
Automated Cross Grain Scratch Removal
An orbital platen sander uses abrasive sheets in an oscillation pattern to sand or polish raw or finished wood
products. The intent of an orbital platen is to reduce the amount of random orbital palm sanding by operators that
is typically done after wide belt sanding. Most orbital platen sanders use fine grade abrasives (usually grades
150–220 or similar) to provide a smooth, consistent finish before heading to the staining or finishing operation.

Upon entering the finishing head, the sanded finish and surface
flatness should require only a few thousandths of an inch to
complete the sanding. For maximum belt life, avoid excessive
sanding pressure. When a sanding platen is used for abrasive belt
support, the platen firmness affects the performance of the head.
The softer the platen, the milder the sanding scratch pattern. When
used in coarse sanding, a soft platen tends to cause over-cutting in
soft grain and edge dumping.

Starting Point Recommendations
Step 1
Initial sanding should level the work piece if not
previously sanded by a wide belt machine. For quick
leveling and aggressive, coarse sanding operations,
use a disc in grade 80 or 100.
Step 2
Intermediate sanding should use a disc in grade 120
or 150, depending on the abrasive grade used on the
previous step. It is recommended to skip no more
than one grade between sanding steps.

3M™ Stikit™ Sheet Roll System
3M™ Stikit™ Sheet Rolls are one long continuous strip of abrasive with the adhesive already
applied. Operators use ALL the abrasive taken from the roll…with conventional methods, a
great deal of the abrasive is wasted since it must be wrapped around a block and is not used
for sanding. Stikit abrasives, used in conjunction with a sanding block, also eliminate many of
the problems associated with hand sanding, such as splinters and finger marks on the wood
surface from uneven sanding pressure. Also, Stikit sheet rolls, unlike dry sheets, do not end
up on the floor of the plant where they are apt to be swept up at the end of the day, causing
unnecessary waste.

The 3M™ Stikit™ Refill Roll System is designed for your comfort and utility. The blocks are
made of tough plastic for long life and durability. They allow you to sand into corners with
the flat end and into curved or contoured areas with the rounded end. When the abrasive
on the surface is used up, simply peel back the used portion, and pull down on the roll end
to expose fresh abrasive. The abrasive used is silicon carbide coated on an A wt. paper
backing with a load resistant coating.

Wheels and Off-Hand Applications
Off-Hand Applications
A Slashed Assembly is strips of abrasives that are held together
with a cloth loop and are wound around a pin assembly in the
center of the wheel. These strips extend between and beyond
the brushes, and as the abrasive wears away, new material can
be released. The abrasive strips are usually slashed 1/8"–5/8"
segments across the width. Because the new abrasive is released
to replace the worn, the wheel diameter remains constant. This
eliminates the need for adjustment in speed or position for wheel
wear. The end result is the most consistent finish available!
