Stresses beyond those listed under Absolute Maximum Ratings may cause permanent damage to the device. These are stress ratings
only, and functional operation of the device at these or any other conditions beyond those indicated under Recommended Operating
Conditions is not implied. Exposure to absolute-maximum-rated conditions for extended periods may affect device reliability.
The input negative-voltage and output voltage ratings may be exceeded if the input and output current ratings are observed.
The value of VCC is provided in the recommended operating conditions table.

9 Detailed Description
9.1 Overview
This 16-bit edge-triggered D-type flip-flop is designed for 1.65-V to 3.6-V VCC operation.
The SN74LVC16374A device is particularly suitable for implementing buffer registers, I/O ports, bidirectional bus
drivers, and working registers. The device can be used as two 8-bit flip-flops or one 16-bit flip-flop. On the
positive transition of the clock (CLK) input, the Q outputs of the flip-flop take on the logic levels set up at the data
(D) inputs.
A buffered output-enable (OE) input can be used to place the eight outputs in either a normal logic state (high or
low logic levels) or the high-impedance state. In the high-impedance state, the outputs neither load nor drive the
bus lines significantly. The high-impedance state and increased drive provide the capability to drive bus lines
without interface or pull-up components.
OE does not affect internal operations of the flip-flop. Old data can be retained or new data can be entered while
the outputs are in the high-impedance state.
To ensure the high-impedance state during power up or power down, OE should be tied to VCC through a pull-up
resistor; the minimum value of the resistor is determined by the current-sinking capability of the driver.
Inputs can be driven from either 3.3-V or 5-V devices. This feature allows the use of this device as a translator in
a mixed 3.3-V/5-V system environment.
This device is fully specified for partial-power-down applications using Ioff. The Ioff circuitry disables the outputs,
preventing damaging current backflow through the device when it is powered down.

10 Application and Implementation
NOTE
Information in the following applications sections is not part of the TI component
specification, and TI does not warrant its accuracy or completeness. TI’s customers are
responsible for determining suitability of components for their purposes. Customers should
validate and test their design implementation to confirm system functionality.
10.1 Application Information
The SN74LVC16374A is a high-drive CMOS device that can be used for a multitude of bus interface type
applications where the data needs to be retained or latched. It can produce 24 mA of drive current at 3.3 V;
therefore, making it ideal for driving multiple outputs and good for high speed applications up to 150 MHz. The
inputs are 5.5-V tolerant allowing the device to translate down to VCC.

10.2.1 Design Requirements
This device uses CMOS technology and has balanced output drive. Care should be taken to avoid bus
contention because it can drive currents that would exceed maximum limits. The high drive will also create fast
edges into light loads, so routing and load conditions should be considered to prevent ringing.
10.2.2 Detailed Design Procedure
1. Recommended input conditions
– Rise time and fall time specs: See (Δt/ΔV) in the Recommended Operating Conditions table.
– Specified High and low levels: See (VIH and VIL) in the Recommended Operating Conditions table.
– Inputs are overvoltage tolerant allowing them to go as high as 5.5 V at any valid VCC.
2. Recommend output conditions
– Load currents should not exceed 50 mA per output and 100 mA total for the part.
– Outputs should not be pulled above VCC.

11 Power Supply Recommendations
The power supply can be any voltage between the MIN and MAX supply voltage rating located in the
Recommended Operating Conditions table.
Each VCC pin should have a good bypass capacitor to prevent power disturbance. For devices with a single
supply, 0.1 μF bypass capacitor is recommended. If there are multiple VCC pins, 0.01 μF or 0.022 μF is
recommended for each power pin. It is acceptable to parallel multiple bypass capacitors to reject different
frequencies of noise. A 0.1 μF and 1 μF are commonly used in parallel. The bypass capacitor should be installed
as close to the power pin as possible for best results.
12 Layout
12.1 Layout Guidelines
When using multiple bit logic devices inputs should not ever float.
In many cases, functions or parts of functions of digital logic devices are unused, for example, when only two
inputs of a triple-input AND gate are used or only 3 of the 4 buffer gates are used. Such input pins should not be
left unconnected because the undefined voltages at the outside connections result in undefined operational
states. Specified in Figure 6 are the rules that must be observed under all circumstances. All unused inputs of
digital logic devices must be connected to a high or low bias to prevent them from floating. The logic level that
should be applied to any particular unused input depends on the function of the device. Generally they will be
tied to GND or VCC; whichever makes more sense or is more convenient. It is generally acceptable to float
outputs unless the part is a transceiver.
