Resistor Trim Equations
N O T E: For best results, the trim m ing range should not exceed +/-20% of the initial o utput voltage set by the factory (Vset). T o trim down to 0.6V, units with an initial output voltage of up to 1.2V can be used.

External Capacitance for SIP Products
All SIP products require external capacitance to be placed on the system board that the SIP will b e designed into. This application note is an attem pt to explain how to translate datasheet inform ation and apply it to a system level board design. I nput Capacitance A lthough input capacitance value is not critical, the input capacitors m ust be capable of storing f airly large am ounts of energy. This m eans, for exam ple, sm all ceram ic capacitors would be inappropriate. The prim ary criteria, though, for choosing the input capacitors is AC ripple c urrent rating. The SIP datasheet contains a chart showing ripple current vs. output current (o r o utput power). The system designer determ ines the m axim um SIP output current required from t he SIP. Based on that num ber, the chart will show a corresponding ripple current rating the d esigner needs to plan for when choosing input capacitors. E xam ple u sing SIP S111-03 for 1.2 V output: The designer knows the S111 output current will be m axim um 8 A in his application. The ripple current chart (3.3V input) shows a 5 A rating required for the input capacitor. A lso known is that the capacitor the designer hopes to use has a ripple current rating o f 3 A. Therefore, the designer m ust use two of the chosen capacitors in parallel for a tota l r ipple current capability of 6A. This will adequately cover the 5 A need. O utput Capacitance T he only requirem ent for capacitance value is for basic circuit stability of the SIP. That value is s pecified on the SIP datasheet— usually 150µF. The other consideration for the output c apacitor is the total ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance). As with ripple current, every c apacitor has a specified ESR. W hen using m ultiple capacitors in parallel, this ESR is added e xactly like parallel resistors. Therefore, m ore capacitors m ean less ESR. The SIP datasheet s pecifies a m axim um total ESR necessary for optim um SIP perform ance. The designer m ay a lso choose to add m ore capacitance to reduce output ripple and noise. E xam ple : The datasheet specifies a m axim um ESR of 100m Ω f or output capacitance. The system d esigner wants to use a capacitor with a specified ESR of 130m Ω . Since 130m Ω is m ore than the needed 100m Ω , two capacitors m ust be used in parallel for a total effective ESR of 65m Ω . G enerally, good, low ESR bulk capacitors are recom m ended for both input and output c apacitance so that fewer capacitors are needed since board real estate is usually an im portant f actor in today's designs.

Impact on Output Voltage Ripple and Transient Response
If the custom er’s application req uires a very low output voltage ripple and / or very low o utput voltage overshoot / undershoot during transients, then the guidelines previously s how n need to be exceeded and good layout practices becom e m andatory. B y using four 330 µ F O S C O N capacitors, each having E S R = 17 m Ω , the output voltage r ipple can be decreased to 50 m V pk-pk on a 1.2V output S IP . A lso during a transient load c ondition (load current steps from 20% to 100% and back, at 2 A / µ sec) the output voltage d oes not overshoot / undershoot m ore than 100m V. W hen fast and deep transient loads are expected, the input capacitor becom es im portant as w ell, especially if the SIP is far from its input voltage source. C apacitors having as m uch as 2 000 µ F and com bined E SR lower than 20 m Ω m ight be needed. P ractical results heavily depend on physical layout and specific load conditions. For critical a pplications the custom er is encouraged to consult with the m anufacturer.
