This has increased the liquidus temperature from that of 183°C for SnPb eutectic alloy to 217 – 221°C for the new alloys. As a result, the heat stress to the components, even in wave soldering, has increased considerably due to higher pre-heat and wave temperatures. Polypropylene capacitors are especially sensitive to heat (the melting point of polypropylene is 160 – 170°C). Wave soldering can be destructive, especially for mechanically small polypropylene capacitors (with lead spacing of 5 to 15 mm), and great care has to be taken during soldering. The recommended solder profiles from KEMET should be used. Please consult KEMET with any questions. In general, the wave soldering curve from IEC Publication 61760–1 Edition 2, serves as a solid guideline for successful soldering. Please see Figure 1. Reflow soldering is not recommended for through-hole film capacitors. Exposing capacitors to a soldering profile in excess of the above the recommended limits may result to degradation or permanent damage to the capacitors. Do not place the polypropylene capacitor through an adhesive curing oven to cure resin for surface mount components. Insert through-hole parts after the curing of surface mount parts. Consult KEMET to discuss the actual temperature profile in the oven, if through-hole components must pass through the adhesive curing process. A maximum two soldering cycles is recommended. Please allow time for the capacitor surface temperature to return to a normal temperature before the second soldering cycle. Selective Soldering Recommendations Selective dip soldering is a variation of reflow soldering. In this method, the printed circuit board with through-hole components to be soldered is preheated and transported over the solder bath as in normal flow soldering without touching the solder. When the board is over the bath, it is stopped and pre-designed solder pots are lifted from the bath with molten solder only at the places of the selected components, and pressed against the lower surface of the board to solder the components. The temperature profile for selective soldering is similar to the double wave flow soldering outlined in this document, however, instead of two baths, there is only one bath with a time from 3 to 10 seconds. In selective soldering, the risk of overheating is greater than in double wave flow soldering, and great care must be taken so that the parts are not overheated. © KEMET Electronics Corporation • KEMET Tower • One East Broward Boulevard Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 USA • 954-766-2800 • www.kemet.com F3071_A50_AXIAL • 10/14/2020 13 Metallized Polyphenylene Sulfide Film with Vacuum-Evaporated Aluminum Electrodes Film Film Dielectric Polypropylene Film Dielectric Film Capacitors General Purpose – Pulse and DC Transient Suppression A50, Axial, 50 – 1,000 VDC (Automotive Grade) 1 Section 2 Sections Construction Detailed Cross Section - Polypropylene Film/Foil Single-sided Metal- AXIALMargin lized Polyester Film (Second Layer) Polypropylene Film Dielectric Metal Contact Layer Lead Polyester Tape Wrapping Metal Foil Lead 1 Section Margin Single-sided Metal Foil Metallized Polyester Film (First Layer) 2 Sections Margin Metal Contact Thermosetting Layer Resin End-Fill AXIAL - Single-sided Metallized Polyester Film Winding Scheme Single-sided Metallized Polyester Film Single-sided Metallized Polypropylene Film Polypropylene Film Dielectric Polyester Tape Wrapping Thermosetting Resin End-Fill AXIAL - Double-sided Metallized Polyester Film Double-sided Metallized Polyester Carrier Film Polypropylene Film Dielectric Single-sided Metallized Polypropylene Film 1 Section © KEMET Electronics Corporation • KEMET Tower • One East Broward Boulevard Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 USA • 954-766-2800 • www.kemet.com 2 Sections F3071_A50_AXIAL • 10/14/2020 14 Film Capacitors General Purpose – Pulse and DC Transient Suppression A50, Axial, 50 – 1,000 VDC (Automotive Grade) Marking Capacitance Capacitance Tolerance Series Dielectric Code Voltage (VDC) Packaging Quantities Diameter (mm) Length (mm) Bulk Long Leads Standard Reel 355 mm Diameter (mm) Length (mm) Bulk Long Leads Standard Reel 355 mm 5 6.5 5 5.5 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 6 6.5 7 7.5 8 8.5 9 9.5 10 12 7 8 8.5 11 11 14 14 14 14 14 14 14 20.5 20.5 20.5 20.5 20.5 20.5 20.5 20.5 20.5 20.5 28 28 28 1,500 1,200 2,000 2,000 2,000 2,000 1,750 1,500 1,250 1,500 1,250 1,250 1,000 1,000 750 750 750 750 500 750 500 500 3,000 1,300 1,300 1,300 1,300 1,200 1,100 1,000 900 1,300 1,200 1,100 1,000 900 800 800 600 600 400 1,000 900 800 9 9.5 10 10.5 11 12.5 10 10.5 11 11.5 12 12.5 13 13.5 14.5 15 15.5 16 17.5 18.5 19 22 28 28 28 28 28 28 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 33 500 500 500 500 500 300 400 400 400 400 300 300 300 300 300 300 200 200 200 150 150 100 800 600 600 400 400 400 400 400 400 400 400 400 400 300 300 300 250 250 200 150 150 – © KEMET Electronics Corporation • KEMET Tower • One East Broward Boulevard Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 USA • 954-766-2800 • www.kemet.com F3071_A50_AXIAL • 10/14/2020 15 Film Capacitors General Purpose – Pulse and DC Transient Suppression A50, Axial, 50 – 1,000 VDC (Automotive Grade) Lead Taping & Packaging (IEC 60286–1) H L I D A Ø E M N G G B C Taping Specification Description Table 2 Symbol Dimensions (mm) Component diameter D 4.5 – 19.5 Body length L 11 – 33 A(1) See Table 2 Reel core diameter E 85 Arbor hole diameter M 30 Reel diameter ø 355 maximum Tape width H 6 ±0.5/9 ±1(2) Body location (lateral deviation) G ≤ 0.7 Body location (longitudinal deviation) N ≤ 1.2 Tape spacing B See Table 3 Lead length from the component body to the adhesive tape I ≥ 20 Distance between reel flanges C See Table 3 Component lead spacing Dimensions in mm Diameter A ≤5 5.1 – 9.5 9.6 – 14.7 14.8 – 19.5 5±0.5 10±0.5 15±0.5 20±1.0 Table 3 Dimensions in mm Length Class B±1.5 C ≤ 11 14 – 20.5 ≥ 26 I II III 52.4 63.6 73.0 75 86 98 (1) Maximum cumulative feed hole error; 1.5 mm per 6 parts.
