General Description
TS5201 is an efficient linear voltage regulator with ultra low noise output, very low dropout voltage ( typically 17mV at light loads and 165mV at 200mA) , and very low power consumption (600uA at 100mA), providing high output current even w hen the application requires very low dropout voltage. The Chip Enable (EN) includes a C MOS or TTL compatible input allows the output to be turned off to prolong battery life. When shutdown, power consumption drops nearly to zero. TS5201 is included a precision voltage reference, error correction circuit, a current limited output driver, over temperature shutdown, revered battery protection and a reference bypass pin to improve its already excellent low-noise performance.

Electrical Specification (Continue)
Note: 1. Exceeding the absolute maximum rating may damage the device. 2. The maximum allowable power dissipation at any Ta is Pd( max) = [TJ(MAX) - Ta] + ӨJA. Exceeding the maximum allowable power dissipation will result in excessive die temperature, and the r egulator will go into thermal shutdown. 3. The device is not guaranteed to func tion outside its operating rating. 4, Output voltage temperatur e coefficient is defined as the worst case voltage change divided by the total temperature r a nge. 5, R egulation is measured at constant junction temperature using low duty cycle pulse tes ting. Par ts are tested for load regulation in the load range from 1mA to 200mA (5V version) and 1mA to 120mA (VOUT2V) enable ( EN) input that allows ON /OFF control of the regulator. Current drain reduces to “zero” when the device is shutdow n, with only micro-amperes of leakage current. The EN is compatible with C MOS logic interfacing. EN may be dir ectly tied to VIN and pulled up to the maximum supply voltage.
Input Capacitor Requirement
An input capacitor of 0.1uF or greater is recommended when the device is more than 10” away from the bulk AC supply capacitance or when the supply is a battery .
Output Capacitor Requirement
The TS5201 series requires an output capacitor to maintain s tability and improve transient response is nec essary. 2.2uF minimum is recommended. Larger values impr ove the regulator’s transient response. The output capacitor value may be increased without limit. The output capacitor should have an ESR (effective series resistance) less than 5Ω and a resonant frequency above 1MHz. Ultra low ESR capacitors can cause a low amplitude oscillation on the output and/or under damped transient response. Mos t of tantalum or aluminum electrolytic capacitors are adequate; film types will work . Sinc e many o aluminum elec trolytic have electroly tes that freeze at about –30 C , solid tantalums are recommended for operation o below –25 C . At low er values of output current, less output capacitance is required for output s tability . The capacitor can be reduced to 0.47uF for current below 10mA or 0.33uF for currents below 1mA.
Refer ence Bypass Capacitor
Bypass is connec ted to the internal voltage referenc e. A 470pF capacitor (CBYPASS) connected from Bypass to Ground quiets this reference, providing a s ignificant reduction in output noise. CBYPASS reduces the regulator phase margin; when using CBYPASS, output capacitors of 2.2uF or greater are generally required to maintain stability . The s tar up speed of the TS5201 is inversely proportional to the size of the reference bypass capacitor. Applications requiring a slow ramp up of output voltage should consider larger values of CBYPASS. Likewise, if rapid turn on is necessary, consider omitting CBYPASS. If output noise is not a major concern, omitted CBYPASS and leave Bypass open.
No Load Stability
The TS5201 series will remain s table and in regulation w ith no load, unlike many other voltage regulators. This is especially important in C MOS R AM keep alive applications.
Adj ustable Regulator Design
The adjustable regulator versions can be adjusted to a spec ific output voltage by using two ex ternal r esistors to programming the output voltage anywher e between 1.25 and the 8V maximum operating rating of the family. Two resistors are used. Resis tors can be quite large up to 470kΩ , because of the very high input impedance and low bias current of the sense comparator, the resis tor values are calculated by: A capacitor from Adjus t to Ground provides greatly improved noise per for mance. Ther mal Characteristi cs
TS5201 series is designed to provide 200mA (5V version) of continuous current in a very s mall package. Maximum power dissipation can be calculated based on the output current and the voltage drop across the part. To determine the maximum power dissipation of the package, use the junc tion-ambient ther mal resistance of the dev ice and the following basic equation: PD(MAX) = [ TJ(MAX) – TA ] /ΘJA TJ(MAX) is the max imum junc tion temperature of the die(125 C), and Ta is the ambient operating temper ature. ΘJA is layout dependent, the ac tual pow er dissipation of the regulator circuit can be deter mined using the equation: PD = (VIN – VOUT) * IOUT + VIN * IGND Subs tituting Pd( max) for Pd and solving for the operating conditions that are critical to the application will give the maximum operating conditions for the regulator circuit. For example, when operating the TS5201C S33 at room temperature w ith a minimum footprint layout, the maximum input voltage for a set output current can be determined as follows: o o o PD(MAX) = (12 5 C – 25 C) / 22 0 C /W PD(MAX) = 45 5 mW The junction to ambient ther mal resistance for the minimum footprint is 220 C/W, the maximum power dis sipation must not be exceeded for proper operation. Using the output voltage of 3.3V and an output current of 120mA, the maximum input voltage can be determined. From the electrical charac teristics table, the max imum gr ound curr ent for 120mA output current is 2.5mA. 445mW = ( VIN – 3.3V ) * 200mA + VIN * 2.5mA 445mW = VIN * 200mA – 3.3 * 200mA + VIN * 2.5mA 445mW = VIN * 200mA – 495mW + VIN * 2.5mA 950mW = VIN * 152.5mA VIN ( max) = 6.23V Therefore, a 3.3V application at 200mA of output curr ent can accept a maximum input voltage of 6.23V in a SOP-8 pac k age.

Mi nimum Load
