OB2500P High Precision CC/CV Primary-Side Power Switch FEATURES OB2500P is a high performance offline PSR power switch for low power AC/DC charger and adapter applications. It operates in primary-side sensing and regulation. Consequently, opto-coupler and TL431 could be eliminated. Proprietary Constant Voltage (CV) and Constant Current (CC) control is integrated as shown in the figure below. In CC control, the current and output power setting can be adjusted externally by the sense resistor Rs at CS pin. In CV control, multi-mode operations are utilized to achieve high performance and high efficiency. In addition, good load regulation is achieved by the built-in cable drop compensation. Device operates in PFM in CC mode at large load condition and it operates in PWM with frequency reduction at light/medium load. The chip consumes very low operation current. It achieves less than 75mW standby power to meet strict standby power standard. OPERATION DESCRIPTION OB2500P is a cost effective PSR power switch optimized for off-line low power AC/DC applications including battery chargers. It operates in primary side sensing and regulation, thus opto-coupler and TL431 are not required. Proprietary built-in CV and CC control can achieve high precision CC/CV control meeting most charger application requirements. Figure.2. Auxiliary voltage waveform Via a resistor divider connected between the auxiliary winding and FB (pin 3), the auxiliary voltage is sampled at the middle of the de-magnetization and it is hold until the next sampling. The sampled voltage is compared with reference voltage Vref (typical 2.5V) and the difference is amplified. The error amplifier output reflects the load condition and controls the switching off time to regulate the output voltage, thus constant output voltage can be achieved. When the sampled voltage is below Vref and the error amplifier output reaches its minimum, the switching frequency is controlled by the sampled voltage to regulate the output current, thus the constant output current can be achieved. 源 Startup Current and Start up Control Startup current of OB2500P is designed to be very low so that VDD could be charged up above UVLO threshold level and device starts up quickly. A large value startup resistor can therefore be used to minimize the power loss yet achieve a reliable startup in application. lt o 泰 Operating Current The operating current of OB2500P is as low as 850uA (typical). Good efficiency and les than 75mW standby power is achieved with the low operating current. ig ht co nf id en tia CC/CV Operation OB2500P is designed to produce good CC/CV control characteristic as shown in the Figure. 1. In charger applications, a discharged battery charging starts in the CC portion of the curve until it is nearly full charged and smoothly switches to operate in CV portion of the curve. The CC portion provides output current limiting. In CV operation, the output voltage is regulated through the primary side control. In CC operation mode, OB2500P will regulate the output current constant regardless of the output voltage drop. O n- Br Principle of Operation To support OB2500P series proprietary CC/CV control, system needs to be designed in DCM mode for flyback system (Refer to Typical Application Diagram in page1). In the DCM flyback converter, the output voltage can be sensed via the auxiliary winding. During MOSFET turn-on time, the load current is supplied from the output filter capacitor, Co, and the current in the primary winding ramps up. When MOSFET turns off, the energy stored in the primary winding is transferred to the secondary side and the current in the secondary winding is IS  NP  IP NS Figure.3. Adjustable output power by changing Rs (1) Operation Switching Frequency The switching frequency of OB2500P is adaptively controlled according to the load conditions and the operation modes. For flyback operating in DCM, the maximum output power is given by The auxiliary voltage reflects the output voltage as shown in Figure.2 and it is given by V AUX  N AUX  (VO  V ) NS Adjustable CC Point and Output Power In OB2500P series, the CC point and maximum output power can be externally adjusted by external current sense resistor Rs at CS pin as illustrated in the typical application diagram. The larger Rs, the smaller CC point is, and the smaller output power becomes, and vice versa as shown in Figure.3. As the load current decreases from full-load to no-load, the offset voltage at INV will increase. It can also be programmed by adjusting the resistance of the divider to compensate the drop for various cable lines used. Refer to the equation 3, the change of the primary winding inductance results in the change of the maximum output power and the constant output current in CC mode. To compensate the change from variations of primary winding inductance, the switching frequency is locked by an internal loop and the switching frequency is FSW  1 (4) 2TDemag ∆V 45  6200 10 6  100%  11.16% Vout 2.5 lt o 泰 源 Since TDemag is inversely proportional to the inductance, as a result, the product Lp and fsw is constant, thus the maximum output power and constant current in CC mode will not change as primary winding inductance changes. Up to ±7% variation of the primary winding inductance can be compensated. en tia On Time OCP Compensation The variation of max output current in CC mode can be rather large if no compensation is provided. The OCP threshold value is self adjusted higher at higher AC voltage. This OCP threshold slope adjustment helps to compensate the increased output current limit at higher AC voltage. In OB2500P, a proprietary OCP compensation block is integrated and no external components are needed. The OCP threshold in OB2500P series is a function of the switching ON time. For the ON time between 1.6us to 6.4us (typical), the OCP threshold changes linearly from 500mV to 590mV. For the ON time larger than 6.4us, the OCP threshold is clamped to 590mV, as shown in Figure 4. ig ht co nf id Current Sensing and Leading Edge Blanking Cycle-by-Cycle current limiting is offered in OB2500P. The switch current is detected by a sense resistor into the CS pin. An internal leading edge blanking circuit chops off the sensed voltage spike at initial power MOSFET on state so that the external RC filtering on sense input is no longer needed. O n- Br CC mode shutdown function In OB2500P, to prevent the controller operating under abnormal conditions, the minimum output voltage of CC mode is limited to predetermined voltage. The CC output voltage is sampled through FB pin from auxiliary winding at the middle of the de-magnetization. When the FB sampled voltage is below 1.55V and last 1024-2048 cycle, the controller will shut down. Figure.4. On time OCP compensation Programmable Cable Drop Compensation In OB2500P, cable drop compensation is implemented to achieve good load regulation. An offset voltage is generated at INV pin by an internal current flowing into the resister divider. The current is proportional to the switching off time, ©On-Bright Electronics Protection Control Good power supply system reliability is achieved with its rich protection features including precise on-chip OTP, cycle-by-cycle current limiting (OCP), output over voltage protection, VDD over voltage protection, short circuit protection, under voltage lockout on VDD (UVLO). VDD is supplied by transformer auxiliary winding output. The output of OB2500P is shut down when VDD drops below UVLO (ON) and the power converter enters power on start-up sequence thereafter.
