The software is installed directly on the server and allows applications to talk to devices across a network as though the devices were directly attached to the server. In actuality, the devices are connected to a Digi device server or terminal server somewhere on the network. RealPort is unique among COM port re-directors. It is the only implementation that allows multiple connections to multiple ports over a single TCP/IP connection. Other implementations require a separate TCP/IP connection for each serial port, adding additional network traffic and congestion. RealPort also provides end-to-end encryption and full hardware flow control, as well as optimizations for packetization, latency and throughput.
