If both are implemented in one device it is called dual mode. Dual mode chips implement the low energy specification and may consume just a fraction of the power of classic Bluetooth, allowing the short-range wireless standard to extend to coin cell battery applications Dual mode chips combine low energy with the power of classic Bluetooth and are likely to become a de facto feature in almost all new Bluetooth enabled cellular phones,computers or portable communication nodes. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is not backwards compatible with previous Bluetooth classic standards (2.1+EDR or 3.0). A block diagram can be found in chapter 8. Available now: Bluetooth 2.1 SPP embedded. Available Q2/13: Bluetooth 2.1 SPP embedded – Bluetooth 4.0 LE GATT/GAP will be available Q2/2013 All HW versions 05 and above will support Bluetooth 2.1 SPP embedded – Bluetooth 4.0 LE GATT/GAP.
